Abdominal Migraine In Adults

Abdominal Migraine in Adults: It Exists.

As late as 2001, doctors and neurologists were arguing whether there was such as thing as abdominal migraine in adults. The debilitating condition was well known in children, but it was thought children grew out of it. Now, the general consensus of the medical community is that abdominal migraines in adults exist. Doctors call abdominal migraine in adults a variety of names, including silent migraine, acephalgic migraine and migraine without pain.

Symptoms

An abdominal migraine in adults has the same symptoms of abdominal migraines in children. Their faces become very pale or flushed as if they have a fever. Then, they feel severe cramping or soreness in the abdominal area. They are often nauseated and vomit. This can last for a few hours or a few days.

Then, the abdominal migraine in adults symptoms mysteriously vanish, only to return days, weeks or months later. Sometimes, the body gives a warning sign that a silent migraine attack is about to begin. This is called an aura. It manifests differently to everyone. It can appear as a visual hallucination, such as flashing zig-zags. Or perhaps it will seem as if you are looking out onto the world through broken glasses when you dont wear lasses. Auras can also manifest as strange smells and strange ringing or hissing in the ears.

Treatment

Although abdominal migraine in adults is frightening, they are treatable. If you are an adult without a history of migraines or abdominal migraines as a child, you should go to the hospital to be sure you do not have anything more serious. Medications for abdominal migraine in adults are exactly the same as for any other type of migraine. These include triptans, ergotamine and, in rare instances, opiates. The key is to take them as soon as an attack begins, perhaps during the aura phase.
